What a Relief!!!

Congratulations! We have reached the end of this course with much success! I know so because we each had to do presentations of our assignments and I saw the evidences of the your hard work.I am so impressed with the different levels of technology knowledge and skills demonstrated. But I have to say that I am so proud of myself. At the beginning of this course I was so intimidated by the required assignments. But with all your encouragement and support I can say that I have gained so much new information and my technology skills have greatly increased and improved. Thank you - all of you - your encouragement went a long way in keeping me committed to completing the required assignments especially the geo-narrative and course management and to completing this course. I wish all of you a successful academic journey. May you all reach the goals you have set for yourselves. I look forward to seeing some of you Literacy majors in the next two semesters. Have a great Christmas. Rest, relax, have fun and be ready for the Spring semester.

Teaching is not a profession; it's a passion. -- Unknown
When we have passion we have boundless enthusiasm, powerful emotions or appetite, zeal, ardor and fervor. Take these and apply them to your students and instruction and you will have unbelieveable success. Any profession, especially teaching, is dead without the passion.

Thank You!

I would like to express my gratitude to you, my ED 638 colleagues and Dr. Rivera for your guidance and support in making this class a wonderful learning experience. I can definitely utilize the knowledge and experience that I have gained with using the Internet as a teaching tool in my work. I have the confidence to share the Internet tools with my colleagues at school so they could also benefit with the technology of the times! Farewell to you all, may God Bless You and Your Family during this holiday season and always!

~GOODBYE & MERRY CHRISTMAS~

It was a pleasure taking this class and taking that opportunity of learning so much about what the internet has to offer to make learning more fun for our students. I had fun learning in and out of class whether through moodling, emailing, blogging and class presentations. Everyone did an awesome job. I truthfully regret not making in the last day of class due to a fever. But I didn't want any one to get sick nor feel sorry for me. So good thing I got plenty rest and got better today. Once again, thank you all for the great times and wonderful learning experience. Now we can in turn teach our students what we have learned and instill that learning through the internet is gaining useful knowledge that will be carried on throughout all the years of schooling.

Farewell everyone, keep in touch, and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all and your families!

Farewell Message

Dear ED638 Students,

Happy Holidays, and thank you for all the wonderful educational technology presentations! Thank you also to those who wished me a belated happy birthday! I guess we can't stay young forever! In any event, it has been a pleasure having all of you as students this semester. I’m happy that you’ve gained much knowledge on teaching with the internet, applying technology to develop students' higher order thinking skills & creativity, and so much more! I encourage you to continue to apply what you’ve learned to empower your students to excel! Good luck in all your endeavors!

Warmest regards,
Dr. Rivera

This is the end, my friends.

I'm relieved that we all got through the semester unscathed, maybe a little weary, but still beaming with smiles. I enjoyed our last session last night and I especially enjoyed sharing my portfolio with everyone in class. Good luck with all your future endeavors. Happy Holidays!

ADIOS...

It was great meeting all of you and exploring the different technology tools out there. I have a learned a great deal from you all because we are all unique people. This class has taught me much more then just surfing the internet. There are many tools out there we can use in our classrooms. I forward to having classes with many of you in the future.
Merry Christmas and Blessings for a Prosperous 2010!! (thanks for the picture DAR)

Farewell

It was a pleasure taking this class with all of you. I hope you know that I value everything each one of you had to say even if i didn't reply to your post. I will you all the best of luck in you future academic pursuits.

It was a fun semester!

“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.”-- Anatole France

This semester has gone by really fast and I am kind of sad to see that our class has finally come to an end. I hope that everyone is more tech savvy now than they were a few months ago. I know I am. I am glad I took this class because I have been using some of the tools in my classroom. It was a fun trip and hopefully I get to see all of you again in another class. Happy Holidays!

"One never notices what has been done; one can only see what remains to be done." -- Marie Curie

This quote would fit today! Everyone scrambling to get the final touches done before they present. Funny how it's always the same in every class, even as teachers we find ourselves rethinking if the work accomplished or completed is done correctly. This is every student's life cycle. As for mine, it is just the beginning! Sure wish I am almost done or half way at least like the rest of you.

Thank you once again for your acquaintance and your great ideas. It was a pleasure being in class with such a wonderful team!

Good luck to all of you and I hope to share a class with you again!

"Confidence comes not from always being right, but from not fearing to be wrong."

I really appeciate this inspirational quote especially because part of my learning to gain confidence to teach with the Internet was to begin with "not fearing to be wrong" over and over again.

Gaining confidence to teach with the Internet has been a great learning experience. This course required hands-on application of a variety of Internet tools that was disseminated in several of ways.  First, an Internet tool was explored, next, we were tasked to implement the tool in a classroom and finally we were tasked to share it with our classmates in this course. As I reflect on the past four months of this course, I am convinced without a doubt that it was the hands on application of the Internet tools that provided me with the confidence to teach with the Internet.  Thank you all for being a part of such a great experience.

It's Over!

This class has been very challenging but I am so happy to have learned so much! I am now more technologically literate and feel like I am able to hold my own in this field of instruction. Thank you everyone for your support and encouragement because without it, I would have given up. Good luck to all of you.

I keep coming back to this quote, maybe it is because it reminds me of ED638 and all the hope and confidence my colleagues instilled in me! Thank you all for the encouragement

"Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude." Zig Ziglar

How far you go to achieve your goals in life depends on your perserverance, not your natural abilities. So no matter how smart or talented a person is, without dedication and enthusiasm, there is minimal, if any success.

As educators, we must believe in what we do for our students in order to be successful. When we do our best, we are able to make a difference in our student's lives.

We presented our Geo-narratives during our previous class session. I enjoyed seeing how different subject areas and grade levels can benefit by using Google earth. Being able explore Google earth and record a tour was awesome. I plan on further exploring or playing with the website during Christmas vacation.

Good luck to you all on your final presentations! See you in class!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Class on Thursday was great. I had the chance to watch my colleagues present their Geo Narrative. They all had excellent ideas on various lessons utilizing Google Earth. I was missing my standards for my lesson plan so given the option to present on Dec. 3 was the best date for me to present. Days are going by so quick that we only have one more class meeting to go. I can't believe we are so close to ending this semester. So have to buckle down and getting working on LIVETEXT uploads and Finalizing my Geo Narrative Lesson Plan N.E.T.S. Taking it day by day but it will all get done.

Before I leave I want to wish everyone and their family a Blessed Thanksgiving!

It was more than Turkey!

"A teacher who can arouse a feeling for one single good action, for one single good poem, accomplishes more than he who fills our memory with rows and rows of natural objects, classified with name and form." -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Sorry, I missed class today and that I didn't get to see your presentations. But my students and I had a pre-arranged event. We hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for the manamko at Guma Trankilidat; this is our 5th year to do so.

This quote is quite fitting for this evening for me because after the function, as we were waiting for everyone to be picked up, my students expressed their experiences and thoughts of this evening. They all seemed to feel good about themselves hearing that the residents of the home praising them for a job well done and how the made them feel "alive" again with our presence. The kids finally understood why they were there and that the residents really appreciated them visiting.

One girl asked me if we could come back and do this kind of activity again, she asked me this and then started to cry. She told me that she felt guilty and that she regrets not spending time with her grandparents. Another student also declared to the group that they aren' t going to take people and the passing days for granted anymore.

All in all, the emotions that spilled out today made me feel that I accomplished something different, something more than a number grade; that I had reached a new teaching standard/ method. So if you ask me what content standards I used today, I wouldn't just have 3 to justify the lessons learned - I used ALL of them!

In this video, President Napoleon is giving his thanks to us for coming. I sure hope it plays.

We're almost done

"They may forget what you said but they will never forget how you made them feel." - Carol Buchner

Sometimes I wonder if I am wasting too much energy when I teach because it seems that my students aren't listening to me, however I think that the energy and enthusiasm I bring to my classroom make my students happy to be there.

Today was a short day in class and I enjoyed the presentations, I am a bit disappointed with myself because my place marks were not saved properly. Overall I think everyone who presented did a great job and I am looking forward to seeing the others present in our next class meeting. So we are almost done with the semester, lets not stress out too much with our portfolios everyone.

GEO NARRATIVE

Tonight we looked at different geo-narratives and lesson plans. It was nice to see the different creative styles we each have. Using google earth was fun and there is so much more to explore with it. It did take some time to learn but after a few trial and errors, and information given in class it turned out to be a success.

Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!

loads of fun

"It isn't the load that weighs us down - it's the way we carry it." - Anonymous

We tend to be bombarded with many things that go on in our life. Whether it's work, school, or extracurricular activities. How we react to it depends on how we carry it. It wasn't until I started teaching that I learned the value of patience. No matter what comes our way, we should try to find a positive side to it and not let it affect our emotions because we may just end up taking out on someone we care about.

Google Earth

Tonight's class was a learning experience for me. As I presented my lesson, I realized that I was missing the standards in my lesson plan. So I need to go back and make adjustments to each of my lessons. As I presented Google Earth, I wasn't confident that I was presenting it the right way, but with the help with everyone in class, I was able to correct what I was doing incorrectly. Thanks for the help. Everyone who presented tonight had really great topics that their lessons reflected upon. Kudos!

"Learning is finding out what we already know. Doing is demonstrating that you know it. Teaching is reminding others that they know just as much as you. You are all learners, doers and teachers." Richard Bach
This quote reflects my feelings of tonight's class and my presentation.

A goal is a dream with a deadline. Napoleon Hill

I believe in dreams. You can have many dreams which allow you to go above and beyond. We need to take hold of our dreams and make it a reality. By placing a goal, we are now able to reach our dreams and achieve success!

My goal is to successfully complete this class! After the Language Arts Conference, I felt one step closer to reaching my goal. However, there are still several huge steps left to take. I need all the time and energy left to make this happen.

You think,....

"Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them become what they are capable of becoming." -- Goethe

This quote is exactly how I fell everyone should be to each other. Treat everyone as you would like to be treated. We should give our students the benefit of the doubt when it comes to respect because it is a two way street. Aside from respect when you address someone with the dignity they deserve they will eventually act more to the part they are perceived as (especially when its a positive perception).

For some odd reason this quote reminds me of a couple Disney movies and songs. Like Pocahontas' song color of the wind. This songs talks about people who think they know everything and those who think they own things. Her message is a reminder that everything belongs to itself and no other and that everyone is connected somehow so the treatment should be just so. And not to judge someone for who you think they are; find out more about them from that person; don't assume.

Who knows you could have a class full of potential doctors and lawyers who could be saving your life one day.

Awesome job on the presentation everyone! and thanks to Yollie and Dar for putting the slides together even at the very moment!!

Pressure

Okay, so I am trying my best to get everything completed for the upcoming class presentations and to finalize the remaining assignments that are due. I am currently completing my lesson plan for my geo-narrative presentation and touching up on my live text portfolio. I am not to sure about everyone else but I am starting to feel the pressure of the stress building up inside of my head! Great Job to everyone for a great group presentation @ the L.A. Conference.

"If a seed of lettuce will not grow, we do not blame the lettuce. Instead, the fault lies with us for not having nourished the seed properly" -Buddist proverb

I chose this quote but it reflects my current situation of procrastinating and not being on top of my work!

Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions.
Albert Einstein

This week was spend finalizing the blog and the the livetext portfolio. I haven't done too much work for either of them. I tend to wait until all the explorations are complete before I start compiling my portfolio. My blog is still a work in progress. As I went about the course requirements, I've been making notes has to how to put the technology portfolio together.

Lessons through story

"Thought flows in terms of stories -- stories about events, stories about people, and stories about intentions and achievements. The best teachers are the best storytellers. We learn in the form of stories." -- Frank Smith

This quote has much meaning to me as I tell my students many stories of my experiences as a student. Many of the stories I tell them deal with strategies I developed in becoming more competent learner as well as my experiences with peer pressure growing up as a teenager. I try to always encourage my students to stay on the path of learning and not to be distracted by unnecessary activities and inappropriate actions. I tell them many stories about my experiences because as a child I didn't have many adults share their experiences with me and I hope that my stories will help them someway as they grow older.

I have been thinking about what types of activities to do with for my Google Earth presentation. I am thinking about comparing landforms, exploring the infrastructure of a major city or taking a site seeing tour for my lessons.

storytelling

"Thought flows in terms of stories -- stories about events, stories about people, and stories about intentions and achievements. The best teachers are the best storytellers. We learn in the form of stories." -- Frank Smith

Not only are teachers the best storytellers, so are parents. I love to relate with the students. I feel that it makes them feel like we are human too. We make mistakes and learn from them. We are with students probably more than they are with their own family. During character when we talk about the weekend or experiences in life, it's really rewarding when they will come up to you later and ask you more or ask for advice.

Congratulations, ED638 Students!

Dear ED638 Students,

Congratulations! You did an awesome presentation at the Language Arts Conference! The participants walked away with a wealth of knowledge on effective Internet tools that they can use to enhance instruction! I'm so proud of all of you! Keep up the great work, and I'll see you online today!

All the best,
Dr. Rivera

Making a Difference!

"To me success means effectiveness in the world, that I am able to carry my ideas and values into the world--that I am able to change it in positive ways." Maxine Hong Kingston

As an educator, being successful is not only guiding students toward academic achievement but also in their social and emotional well-being. Inspiring and nurturing students to develop into good, productive citizens makes a world of difference! If I made an impact on at least one student, I was successful!

Last class we had an opportunity to practice our internet tools presentation for the Language Arts Conference. I was able to get a better feel and idea of what to expect during the presentation. It also helped me to build a little more confidence in myself as I prepared for my first conference presentation ever. I appreciate the opportunity to work with my colleagues.

Sorry Everyone Been Missing In Action!

Hi Everyone! Sorry, I've been out recovering and trying to get as much rest while on leave. I'll be seeing you all though next class meeting. Here's a picture of my adorable baby girl whom I can't take my eyes off. I gave birth October 24, 2009 at GMH. My baby girl came out weighing 6.5 pounds and 19.5 inches long. She's a blessing given to us from God above because my hubby and I been waiting for 4 years to have our bundle of joy. We're so thankful she came healthy and right in time for the holidays.

Hope all is great with everyone especially with the Language Arts Conference outcome.
I heard you all did a great job! KUDOS!

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children...to leave the world a better place...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” --Ralph Waldo Emerson

“If you're going to be able to look back on something and laugh about it, you might as well laugh about it now.”—Marie Osmond

There are times in the classroom and at home where a moment calls for a good laugh. I never pass up this opportunity (unless its at the expense of others) and encourage my students to do the same. I believe that its important to take advantage of these moments and make memories from them.

Learning by example

“We learn by example and by direct experience because there are real limits to the adequacy of verbal instruction.” -- Malcom Gladwell

This quote is very relevant to the importance of employing different approaches in instruction. In addition to catering to students who are more receptive to kinesthetic learning, teachers can also develop activities in which students learn through applying the lessons within the context of a personal experience.

Also, in more general terms, learning by example is one of the most powerful learning strategies. In many occupational fields, academic work merely provides a preliminary foundation upon which the actual experience—gained from on-the-job training—is built.

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

There are many times that I have taken the beaten path and followed the flock. In life, things would be so much easier if we just all did what we were supposed to do. But what would make life more extraordinary is to do something that everyone else did not do. Sing a song when you cry. Talk to the mirror. Put a funny sticker on your student's hand. Write your student a note on scrap paper that he/she threw away. Choosing to do something that is beyond typical is what defines the passion of a person.

"Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you help them become what they are capable of becoming." -- Goethe

This quote is very significant to me because of where I teach. I think that we are all guilty of jumping the gun on some of students if they turn in work late or act up in class. Sometimes we don't consider how their day started or if something happened the night before. I know that I would need to take a step back at times and analyze some situations I have with my students.

Achieve It!

Photo:  image.google.com

"Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, you can achieve." -- Mary Kay Ash

All too many times I see the negativity written all over my students faces and it is a challenge to erase such negativity since they are reminded by so many that “this is it”.  With the hope to diminish the constant negativity, I posted a bulletin in my classroom that reads:  “Conceive it, believe it, achieve it”.

Motivated

"Your role as a leader is even more important than you might imagine. You have the power to help people become winners." --Ken Blanchard

As teachers, we help motivate students to become better learners. Even though we sometimes don’t know it, but tutoring a student, helping them discover new things, giving them advice or just listening to their stories can be powerful motivational techniques that allow students to understand that they can overcome difficulties and accomplish difficult tasks.

Today in class I explored Google Earth a little bit more. I am still thinking of what to do for my geonarrative, but I’m leaning towards animals in different continents. Since my students are learning about the basic needs of animals, I might try to tie in Google Earth with my current science lessons.

Seeing the Light!

"Perseverance is a great element of success. If you knock long enough at the gate, you are sure to wake up somebody." Longfellow

This reminds me of what it takes for teachers to reach some students who have difficulties grasping the content and/or skills being taught. These students would need to be taught and retaught several times with different strategies in order for them maintain what they've learned. Teachers who have perseverance understand the needs of these students and are willing to do what it takes for students to achieve. If teachers continue to make the effort necessary to reach students, eventually the students will see the light!

In class we were able to see how to navigate Google Earth, put place marks, and provide descriptions. We were also fortunate to see samples of the Geo-Narrative lesson plans from previous ED638 students. This gave me a better understanding of what is expected for this assignment. Now I am ready to venture out into the virtual world!

"The greatest sign of a success for a teacher...is to be able to say, "The children are now working as if I did not exist." -- Maria Montessori

Recently, I felt a sense of accomplishment as I was visited by my former students who thanked me and expressed how proud they are of themselves for being able to write essays without me.

“You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”—Khalil Gibran

Most of what we do in our lives is impressionable. As a teacher, I find that giving my all in everything I do is a just reward for all the effort I put in. At times I found that "treats or rewards" were temporary and expensive. With constant praising, my students seem to respond better. When students see that their teacher is going all out for a lesson or activity, students get excited. They tend to "listen" to the teacher more. For me, this is where the magic happens. Students in turn give their best.

"I challenge you to make your life like a masterpiece. I challenge you to join the ranks of those people who live what they teach, who walk their talk." -- Anthony Robbins

This quote is a personal challenge. There is nothing more I dislike than a hypocrite - so I need to be very careful about what I "teach". I have to be sure that I can live up to what I am teaching. If it is about being fair, then I need to be sure that I can exhibit the qualities of being fair, etc. This is not an easy challenge because it is often easier to just talk the talk.

I missed class tonight because of work responsibilities. I have been knee deep in trying to get the School Report Cards out before the end of the month when it must be posted on line. If any of you are teachers, make sure you have a chance to look over your school's grade. This task provided me with the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Excel program. I can now create graphs, format graphs, edit graphs, and transfer them from one document to another. I also know how to take 3,000 + employees and disaggregate the information into a variety of categories such as gender, ethnicity, age, job location, job position, and more. I know how to insert worksheets, row, columns and how to hide and unhide the same. Because I missed class, I also missed out on learning about Google Earth so right now I am in the dark. I will however, endeavor to learn about it this week. Perhaps I can make up for late work by using Google earth to show you the places I went to in Greece. (Image by Faye - White Ginger)

Stay Positive

"Don't limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, you can achieve." -- Mary Kay Ash

I think sometimes there are times when we get high stress levels that affect our attitudes towards our profession and we eventually reach a plateau of ideas, but fortunately many of us learn to find ways to create goals and push ourselves to achieve them.

I am still working on my presentation for the conference. I am thinking about using www.factmonster.com for my presentation. As for Googe Earth, I have spent a little time exploring and learning the application

Crayola's new color is...

" It is the supreme art of a teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge."
- Albert Einstein

How many colors does Crayola really have??? There is about 150 -200 existing colors already. What should the new color be? Should it have a smell, a taste, or a different shape?

The teacher holds the key tot he success of the being taught. When a teacher is creative and makes learning fun and meaningful, knowledge is bound to take place. But if the lesson is taught in the old traditional method( I speak, you listen and I ask questions, you answer), chances of learning taking place will not be as evident.

So try using other methods and other means of presenting the lesson besides writing on the board and using worksheets. This why we are in this class, to expand our tool belts and to gain our new tools with technology.

Google Earth was pretty interesting, I found my house and school. But the only thing holding me back from saying that it was FANTASTIC was that it is not in sync with real time. I was hyped about being able to see the cars parked outside my house but bummed when I couldn't see people or cars in motion!

Stress Relief!

Googleimage.com
"Good teaching is one-fourth preparation and three-fourths theatre."- Gail Goldwin

The past week as been personally stressful for me with grades due, assignments due, and trying to implement "10-minutes" of content area time! So during math time in the middle of teaching, I started to laugh!! the great thing about it, was my students didn't ask me why, they just laughed with me (or maybe at me)then we composed ourselves and went on with the lesson.

I have been trying to access moodle but the website is taking to long to upload the files for the class. I know that our effective literacy website is due today but I might be late turning that assignment in because I haven't finalized my write up. Anyone else encountering the same situation as I am?

"One never notices what has been done; one can only see what remains to be done." -- Marie Curie

I can relate to this quote in many ways, I always focus on the things that I have yet to complete and not what I have already accomplished.

Another post

We had to submit our literacy website #3 this week. I reviewed a website that I used in the development of the unit I used for my classroom management system, shel silverstein.com. I enjoyed navigating through it's ins and outs. That website is a lot of fun. Also, I had to play with google earth. That was fun as well. I downloaded an older version of it years ago and still have it on my computer so I used that version.

Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.
Albert Einstein

There is nothing more successful then when you're of value to someone or something.

Get it Done...

"One never notices what has been done; one can only see what remains to be done." -- Marie Curie

With the new position I am in, I am constantly looking for ways I can help students who are struggling with their subjects. I see that they are 'passing' their classes but I know that they can do better. What's done is done, we can learn from it, now let's see what else we can do.

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I find that being in a class filled with brilliant minds is hope for the future. Some of us will go far in our careers, and advance up the ladder. In doing so, I believe that we gain not only knowledge, but a new found perspective on what it takes to be a professional leader. I hope that when that time comes, we do not forget where it is we came from.

Imagination

"Imagination is more important than knowledge."
- Albert Einstein

Please use your imagination and look at the picture carefully. What do you see?

Knowledge is something that continues but there us a certain point in where it stops. For example, our desire as educators to gain knowledge is incremental in where we get our BA, MA, and PHD. But after the PHD (education wise) there is no other step beyond that except to get another degree in an other field. Unlike imagination, there is no limit as long as there is a person, place, or thing to imagine about- which in reality, there ALWAYS will be something to turn the wheels of imagination.

Sorry, this entry was due last Thursday. I had completed my midterm and had failed to remember to publish my blog entry. :(
